Top Grossing Movies in Bollywood

Bollywood is one of the most prolific of the film industries in the world. It has produced worldwide hits and even helped some of their A-listers get to Hollywood. Whether it’s a heart-warming story, comedy or an epic adventure, Bollywood films know how to deliver a good story. Here are some of the industry’s highest grossing movies.

10. Padmaavat (2018)

At around $90 million and a production budget of around $30 million, it is one of the most expensive Bollywood movie ever made. Based on a poem of the same name, it’s about Rani Padmavati a Rajput queen known for her beauty played by Deepika Padukone.

9. Sanju (2018)

A biographical film about the Bollywood actor Sanju Dutt. It follows the tumultuous life of the actor, to his alleged involvement with the 1993 bombings and eventual dropping of the charges against him.

8. Sultan (2016)

The film is about a fictional pehlwani wrestler named Sultan Ali Khan played by Salman Khan opposite Anushka Sharma as his wife.

7. Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)

The first of two parts of an epic action film about a character named Sivudu played by Prabhas. The story is about Sivudu’s journey to help save the former queen of Mahismati and his quest of finding his own true identity.

6. 2.0 (2018)

A stand-alone sequel to Enthiran (2010), this is the only science fiction film on our list. It follows a conflict between a humanoid android named Chitti and Pakshi Rajan, a vengeful ornithologist who wants revenge for the decline of avian life because of cellphone users.

5. Pk (2014)

The first film in our list to have Aamir Khan in the lead role. After the success of 3 Idiots writers, Hirani and Abhijat Joshi worked on this film. A satirical comedy film it follows an alien (Khan) on a research mission on earth.

4. Secret Superstar (2017)

Produced by Aamir Khan himself this musical drama film tells a story of a girl who aspires to be a singer. Hiding behind a niqab she uploads her performances on Youtube as she works on her relationship with her family and mentor.

3. Bajrangi Bhaijiaan (2015)

Another comedy film on our list this stars Salman Khan and Harshaali Malhotra. The film follows the story of a Hindu devotee in his quest to return a mute girl back to her family in Pakistan.

2. Baahubali 2: Conclusion (2017)

Hitting the $278 million mark is the prequel and sequel of the action epic film Baahubali. It tells the story of the sibling rivalry between Amarendra Baahubali and Bhallaladeva with the latter killing the former and as his son, later on, avenges him.

1. Dangal (2016)

First on our list starring none other than Aamir Khan. Grossing around $310-$340 million worldwide. This biographical sports drama film tells the story of India’s first female world-class wrestlers and their father/mentor. The film wasn’t only successful in the box office and became Bollywood's top-grossing movie to date but also critically acclaimed as it won numerous awards and garnered several nominations domestically and abroad.
