The past decade has been nothing short of spectacular for cinema. Box office records getting shattered left and right. With the influx of superhero movies lead by Marvel Studios and with the return of the Star Wars franchise into the fray, you can be sure that you’ll never run out of reasons to keep on visiting your local theatres. So let’s get to it, here are your top 5 highest-grossing movies of all time.
Did I mention that there was an influx of superhero movies in the past decade? Oh yes, I did. And we have not ONE but TWO of them in the top 5. Directed by the Russo brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War) this is one of two slated movies to put an end to the MCU’s (Marvel Cinematic Universe) third phase. We all know that these Avengers movies will be star-studded as they are a culmination of various interwoven storylines beautifully crafted by the studio. So it’s really no surprise that we will have one or two dominating the box office.
Finally the sequel to the Star Wars saga. It introduces us to a new set of characters and gave us back some beloved ones. Directed by J.J. Abrams, it stars Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, son of Han (Harrison Ford) and Leia (Carrie Fisher) and grandson of Darth Vader. Daisy Ridley as Rey as an abandoned child whose highly sensitive to the Force. Once again it’s the First Order seeking to eliminate the New Republic led by Leia. With much anticipation from fans all over the world, it’s also no surprise that it barged right into our top 5.
First of two James Cameron film on our list. Titanic held the top spot for more than a decade before being toppled down by, you guessed it, another Jim Cameron film, Avatar. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes but falling in love in the course of the trip. This movie left us with some of the most memorable scenes ever. It wasn’t just a hit in the box office it also won 11 Oscar awards validating its place on top.
For 10 years this was on top, for two decades James Cameron was king of the world (see what I did there?). Production for the film was put on hold until the necessary technology was available. This movie rose to the top-grossing $2.7 billion. It starred Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, the movie was armed with groundbreaking visual effects and left the audiences definitely wanting for more. Ten years after, we just have to wait a little bit longer for the planned sequel.
This ultimate superhero film is currently the top-grossing movie of all time (box office gross still counting as of writing). Served as the culmination for MCU’s third phase (but yeah, technically it's Spider-Man: Far From Home). Helmed by the Russo brothers once more the film concluded storylines for fan favourites like Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) and many more but ushered new superheroes to take centre stage. Contrary to the title we are definitely far from the Endgame for blockbuster Highest Grossing Movies.
There you have it, anything new you are excited about? You should be, there’s definitely more to come!
